Oom Yung Doe in the Community
The School of Oom Yung Doe in Pittsburgh participates in several community-oriented events during the year. Here are some of our events.
January, 2008
The Ingram Women's Civic Club invited Instructor's from the School of Oom Yung Doe to attend their monthly meeting. At the conclusion of their meeting the group then participated in a series of women's self-defense movements. The techniques they were taught focus on the way a woman’s body naturally moves and can be used immediately for protection. These movements have been taught to women centuries.
Family members and friends of the students at the Mt. Lebanon school attended an evening lesson. They had an opportunity to learn movements to challenge and improve their condition as well as see students and instructors demonstrate more advance forms and techniques.
October, 2007
Instructors from the School of Oom Yung Doe will demonstrate self-defense at "Take Back the Night" in East Liberty.
September, 2007
The School of Oom Yung Doe donates money raised from a Kick-a-Thon to The Neighborhood Academy, which provides a college-preparatory education to low-income students in Pittsburgh.
July, 2007
As young women in the region graduate from high school and prepare for college, the School of Oom Yung Doe in Mt. Lebanon is offering free Mother-Daughter Self-Defense lessons. Mothers and daughters of ALL ages are encouraged to attend.
April, 2007
In April the Pittsburgh region held a Kick-A-Thon to raise money for a charitable organization in the Pittsburgh area. Students signed up friends and family members to donate a penny per kick. Each student then kicked as many times as possible in twenty minutes. Our fastest kicker kicked more than 1400 times in 20 minutes!
March, 2007
In celebration of Women's History Month, the School of Oom Yung Doe in Oakland offered free women's classes each week in March. Lessons included Women's Self-Defense, Tai Chi Chung, and Meditation. Invitations to attend were presented to local chapters of the Girl Scouts and to other women's organizations throughout Allegheny County.
February, 2007
Did you make a New Year's resolution to take better care of your health? During the month of February, the School of Oom Yung Doe in Pittsburgh encouraged people to fulfill that resolution by offering free weekly Tai Chi classes. Because of the slow, low-impact movements of Tai Chi, this was an easier way for folks to get started on their new plans for good health.
Also in February, the School of Oom Yung Doe in Pittsburgh offered our always-popular Women's Self-Defense lessons. Usually offered every other month, these lessons are free to all.
